OVERVIEW
        Government Medical College Kannur is one of the biggest Super Speciality Medical Institution
of North Kerala and is a Centre of Excellence that offers quality medical and para-medical education
with an infrastructure that is one of the best in the country. Within a short span of its inception,
it has made its mark in the field of medical education as a quality institution growing at considerable pace,
grooming future health care professionals. Eminent faculty and fully staffed departments with good facilities,
set an excellent educational environment. The academic achievements of the institution are several,
which include University ranks, admission to higher studies etc. All India toppers in competitive exams for PG entrance
at AIMS, AFMC, All India Medical Entrance etc. it has maintained best results in Kerala in all
university examinations consistently. All the courses offered are approved by competent authority.
The institution aims to offer several courses in various areas of medical science and is also
running PG degree & Diploma courses.
        The teaching Hospital of GMC Kannur is a 1200 bedded hospital complex supported by more than 20
specialities and eight super speciality departments manned by very competent experienced medical professionals
who render their service with a personal touch. This modern hospital has 18 Operation Theatres, fully
equipped with advanced bio-medical equipments to conduct most advanced and complicated surgical
procedures at all speciality and super speciality levels.
        GMC Kannur is a Centre of Excellence and is the ultimate destiny regarding the health care needs of
the entire population of Kannur and Kasargod districts and neighbouring parts of Wayand and Kozhikode districts.
Its sprawling campus consists of Medical College & Hospital, Dental College & Hospital,
Nursing College, Pharmacy College, Nursing School and a dedicated Cardiovascular Unit.
        GMC Kannur was conceived with an objective to open new vistas into the training of medical education for
undergraduates and postgraduates, the lofty objective being to create a generation of socially useful and
ethically conscious doctors. Its purpose is to bring together in one place, educational facilities of
the highest order for the training of self-sufficient personnel in all important branches of health activity,
including medical post graduates. The institute has comprehensive facilities for teaching,
inexhaustible resources for medical and allied research and it delivers credible patient care at an affordable cost.
        Kerala State Co-operative Hospital Complex and Centre for Advanced Medical Services Ltd. No. 4386 (KCHC),
which was a Co-operative Society registered under Kerala Co-operative Societies Act 1969, (Registration No is 4386)
and the date of registration as 26.03.1993, with an objective to establish
a full-fledged hospital with modern medical facilities and provide educational facilities.
        The Academy of Medical Sciences (ACME), Pariyaram was registered under Societies Registration Act in 17.09.1993.
Institutions such as Medical College, Dental College, Nursing College, Nursing school, Pharmacy College,
Public School and Sahakarana Hrudayalaya were functioning under the governance of ACME.
        In tune with Government of Kerala’s concept to have a Government Medical College in each district for
providing enhanced treatment and boost quality medical education in Kerala, on 05.12.2016,
the Hon Chief Minister of Kerala, Sri. Pinarayi Vijayan convened a meeting and decided to take over the Kerala
State Co-operative Hospital Complex and Centre for Advanced Medical Services Ltd. No. 4386
and Academy of Medical Sciences, Pariyaram (Pariyaram Medical College).
        As per Ordinance no 33/2018 dated 14.04.2018, the Government of Kerala had taken over the management
of the Pariyaram medical college. A Board of Control chaired by the District Collector and two
other members was given the charge of the administration of the institution
        As per the Ordinance no 20/2019 dated 02.03.2019 by the Government of Kerala the take-over of
the institution was complete. The erstwhile KCHC & ACME are renamed as “Government Medical College Kannur” under
the control of Director of Medical Education, Kerala
as per GO (rt) no 44/2019 H&FW dated 18.03.2019 & GO no 55/2019 dated 08.04.2019.
