Department of Ophthalmology
The Ophthalmology department commenced in this institution (erstwhile Academy of Medical Sciences ACME) in the year 1994 with a mega eye camp conducted by Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai. From then onwards we slowly developed our department in patient care, teaching, research and faculty development. In the year of 1995, we started conventional extracapsular cataract surgery (ECCE) with intraocular lens implantation. At present we are doing phacoemulsification with foldable intraocular lens implantation under topical anaesthesia and glaucoma surgery. We are also taking care of paediatric population by doing ROP screening, paediatric cataract surgery, horizontal squint surgery etc…. Ours is the prime institute doing maximum number of ROP screening in northern Kerala. We are also having strong experience in managing emergency and trauma care unit in Ophthalmology for the last 28 years. We also conducted a workshop on phacoemulsification and a mega eye camp in 2003 with more than 1000 out patients and did cataract surgery for the needy at the time of our phacoemulsification unitinstallation. Lastly during COVID-19, we managed all the mucormycosis orbit with adequate treatment and exenteration in needed cases.
